Smallville Memories: A Look Back on 10 Years!

The End of the Beginning

“Smallville” began 10 years ago in Fall 2001 just as the Trade Center crumbled and America’s fears gave birth to the need for a new hero. The new hero, Clark Kent, played by newcomer Tom Welling, was a humble and fumbling type, unsure of himself in many ways as both a performer and performance, just as we too were unsure of our place in a larger post-9/11 world.

We met Welling’s co-stars, the denizens of a small town rumbled by a disaster – shades of reality again. Kristin Kreuk brought new dimensions and an Asian sensibility to the character of Lana Lang. Sam Jones III was Pete Ross, Clark’s blonde white bland friend in the comics became his black bland friend. Too bad Jones’ private life didn’t remain as white-bread as his character’s did.

John Schneider, truly TV royalty (a duke even), played Pa Kent as the Duke boy grown up advising his TV son with the best sage advice TV money could buy. Annette O’Toole replaced early casting of Cynthia Ettinger to play Ma Kent. This signaled a return to the franchise for O’Toole who previously was Lana in “Superman III” alongside Chris Reeve.

There were new characters added to the myth too, and it’s hard to think of them as new characters at this 10 year juncture. Allison Mack played Chloe Sullivan, later revealed to be Lois Lane’s cousin and a Lois type character with Lois’s characteristic snooping inquisitiveness. John Glover played the father of a classic villain.

And in the role of that classic villain, Lex Luthor, we met actor Michael Rosenbaum who made me believe a jew could be a bald megalomaniac.

In some ways, “Smallville” played fast and loose with the Superman myth. It embraced Silver Age conceits like the friendship in Smallville between Clark and Lex. But it added new elements like the Kryptonite meteor shower that devastated the town in 1989 or the strangling impact of LuthorCorp on small town America.

The show changed a lot during its 10 seasons. At the point that the show moved to Metropolis, and still called itself “Smallville”, it was truly the story of the guy that Lois called by the name of his small town. The red blue blur gave way to the Blur.

The two-part “Finale” was a great love letter to the fans and a wondrous swan song to the show. Bringing back John Schneider and Annette O’Toole as Clark’s terran parents was inspired. So was returning Terry Stamp to the Jor-El role.

I enjoyed the wedding, the return of Lex, and the debut of Superman. While the Darkseid storyline seemed ancillary to the main plot, it was generally that way throughout the season. This year was about characterization and that was the theme of the finale too.

I loved how Lois wasn’t ready to go through with the wedding and the use of their vows to convince her to go through with the show. When it seemed like the show was going to degenerate to an episode of “Friends” with a Ross and Rachel type I’m ready to get married not but now I’m not, the show quickly resolved that potential cliché by actually getting them to the church on time.

Lex Luthor returned and Michael Rosenbaum had a small role but one in which he reminded viewers why he was so integral to the show for so long. Some viewers may have seen the memory loss as a cop out but I loved how they tied it into continuity. As Lex Luthor became more obsessed with himself, his company forcibly changed its name to LexCorp. Brilliant.

Finally there was Superman. From the Air Force One save which evoked both “Superman” and “Superman Returns” to the music to the flash end credits, this was a love letter to Chris Reeve and the Salkind franchise.

Was it wrong to use a CGI Superman suit on Welling? In my opinion it was not. As Ryan Reynolds is wearing a CGI suit in the upcoming “Green Lantern” movie, so did Welling and so what? Superman appeared, Welling played him. That’s what matters to me.

Proving no stone was left unresolved they even worked Aaron Ashmore back into the cast as Jimmy Olsen’s brother, Jimmy Olsen. Only in comics.

When the show began I lived in Washington, D.C. It was right after 9/11 and I had just lost my best friend a few months earlier. “Smallville” gave me a new friend in an old friend. I moved to Chicago in 2002 and recently relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida. The show has moved around a lot and so have I. I imagine if you think about where you were when the show began, your life has also changed significantly in 10 years. Holy metaphors!

I’ll miss “Smallville” a lot. The show was there for me when I needed it and even when I thought I was done with it in Season Four. But I was there for “Smallville” too. I’ll always remember “Smallville” fondly and wish it a long eternal life in syndication. Thank you Tom Welling and cast and crew for this wonderful final love letter to Superman.

Rosenbaum Turns Down Return to "Smallville"

EW.com are reporting that Michael Rosenbaum will not return to the 10th and final season of "Smallville" to reprise his role of Lex Luthor.

EW has learned that actor Michael Rosenbaum has repeatedly rebuffed attempts by producers this season to get him back on The CW's show to reprise his role as Luthor in the finale.

"He has put the show behind him and moved on," says a knowledgeable source. "He's pursuing his other creative outlet [writing]. By all indications, he is not going to be involved."

There's still a small window of opportunity for Michael to change his mind, with the show wrapping production within the next two months, but it doesn't look likely.

Ilya Salkind Released from Mexico Hospital

Ilya Salkind, the producer of the Superman films of the 1970s and '80s has been released from a Mexican hospital where he was treated for head injuries.

Arturo Torres of the Morelos state medical office says Ilya Salkind left the hospital in Cuernavaca with family over the weekend.

Torres said late Sunday that Salkind was in good condition.

Salkind had been staying at a home near Mexico City and friends reported him missing last week.

Torres says the 63-year-old Salkind didn't have identification when he was admitted to the hospital.

Morelos Attorney General Pedro Benitez says Salkind was hurt in Tepoztlan, south of Mexico City. It was unclear how he was injured.

The Producer of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies, "Supergirl", and "Superboy: The TV Series", Ilya Salkind, it has just been reported exclusively to the Superman Homepage, has regained consciousness for the first time since his hospitalization Monday in Mexico around 9 PM last night Mexico time. Salkind spoke with his attorney in Mexico at the hospital. When asked if he remembered what had taken place, Salkind said he remembered everything. "I took a bad stumble and serious fall," he said.

According to a source close to the Salkinds, friends of Salkind are en route to Mexico from the United States.

The Superboy Homepage & the fans wish Ilya all the best as he is recovering in the hospital.

Glenn Weisberger, Senior Executive of the Ilya Salkind Company, today provided the Superman Homepage with a Press Release regarding Ilya Salkind's visit to Mexico and released some of the details of the accident that resulted in his hospitalization on Monday:

Q: Why was he in Mexico?

A: Mr. Salkind has an estate in Mexico that he visits from time to time in a charming little village near Mexico City. It's a quaint quiet location where he can go to think. He had some business to conduct there so he went down to complete the business and take a little vacation. The most important part of the business was to get away from the frenetic hustle and bustle of Hollywood so that he could work on his next blockbuster

film, THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN. This big budget project is in the financing phase and we plan to be in production later this year.

Q:What happened?

A: He was taking an stroll and had an accident. He was taken to a hospital and unfortunately he didn't have his cell phone with him and

communication lapsed. Mr. Salkind's condition is stable and we hope to
have more information from his doctors shortly. He is expected to return to his home in Los Angeles soon.

BREAKING NEWS: Ilya Salkind Producer Has Been Found Alive!

According to TMZ.com, Ilya Salkind -- the executive producer of Superman I,II and III -- was found alive in a hospital in Mexico this morning ... after friends had reported him missing for several days.

A friend of Salkind tells TMZ ... it's unclear how long Ilya has been in the hospital or why he hasn't been able to contact anyone.

We're told Ilya is currently sedated and friends are waiting to speak with the doctor to find out more information.

As TMZ first reported, Ilya -- the guy who is widely regarded as the person responsible for bringing a live-action Superman movie to the big screen in the 1970s -- went missing this weekend after telling friends he had to run some errands.

BREAKING NEWS: Legendary 'Superman' Producer -- Missing In Mexico

Ilya Salkind, co-Producer of "Superman: The Movie", "Superman II", "Superman III", "Supergirl", "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut", and "Superboy: The TV Series", has been reported as being missing in Mexico City, according to website TMZ. Salkind, 63, came up with the idea in 1974 to produce a series of live-action films starring the Man of Steel. Salkind grew up in Mexico and owned property there. According to TMZ:

The 63-year-old, who was born in Mexico City, had traveled south of the border to handle a property he inherited from his mother who passed away a few years ago.

Friends of Salkind tell us ... members of Ilya's staff last saw the legendary producer at his estate in Mexico on Sunday as he was on his way to "handle some errands and get some dental work done."

However, Salkind has not returned -- and yesterday, his friends filed a missing persons report with Mexican authorities.

UPDATES: Runway Magazine tonight issued a press release and online missing persons report regarding Ilya Salkind. Salkind was last seen about an hour south of Mexico City, Mexico on Sunday night, January 31st. The missing persons report includes photographs, a current description, and information on how to reach those searching for Salkind with information about his current whereabouts. Salkind's Convention Manager Kenny Richardson spoke tonight exclusively with the Superman Homepage, and said "It makes me feel a lot better knowing how Ilya's fans are coming together to help to find him; it says a lot about Ilya."

UPDATE 2: Tonight the Superman Homepage received exclusive information from Salkind's cousin Hector Soto Peralta. According to Mr. Peralta, "[Ilya] was last seen in Tepoztlan, Morelos, on Sunday evening after having dinner with a French friend of his (and his mother's ), Françoise Neff, who was said drove him back home and dropped him in the corner of his street. Apparently "someone" still saw him on Monday. If I have more information, I'll let you know."

Deadline.com & Superman Homepage are reporting that British actor Henry Cavill has been chosen to play Superman in the upcoming Zack Synder-directed film The Man Of Steel.

Snyder has made this statement about the casting:

“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Targeted for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Exclusive Interview: Tracy Lewis (Darla) Interview from Superboy: The TV Series at Superboy Theater

Last week Barry Freiman of the Superman Homepage, in conjunction with the Superboy Homepage and Superboy TV Theater, published an exclusive interview with Stacy Haiduk, the actress who played Lana Lang on “Superboy: The TV Series” (aka “The Adventures of Superboy”). This interview was presented as part of a continuing series of new interviews from the “Superboy” series that began with Sam Rizzo of the Superboy Homepage’s interview over on Superboy TV Theater with actor Barry Meyers who played Bizarro Superboy on several episodes of the show.

This week, Rennie Cowan and Ginger De Los Rios of Superboy TV Theater interviewed actress Tracy Roberts (today Tracy Lewis) who played Lex Luthor’s henchwoman Darla beginning in the second episode of the show’s second season.

Tracy talks about working with Sherman Howard as Lex Luthor, how she won the role of Darla, the Roads Not Taken & the Road to Hell episodes and so much more. She even mentions how her daughter brought her into school in third grade for show and tell which was really funny.

Ashley used to love to watch them hooking Gerard up to the wires to make him fly. And I'd tell her all the time, 'Now Ashley, you cannot tell people how Superboy flies. That is a big, big, no no. So if your friends ask you in school...you don't know! [Laughs] Tell them that he just flies. So she says okay and then one day they had the day when the parents go in and talk about their jobs at school. I think Ashley was in the third grade, maybe. I actually wore the white "Darla Goes Ballistic" suit to the classroom. [Laughs] They gave me a tape to show the actual episode. And I forgot these were third graders, I didn't think they would think this was for real. And they watch the show and I'm shooting lasers out of my eyes and I'm blowing things up. And when the show was over they all just slowly turned around and looked at me like in fear.

"I Spent an Afternoon - and Early Evening - With Lana Lang"

Lois Lane may have spent a night with Superman and admittedly gotten a terrific story out of it, but Ms. Lane's not the only reporter to get face-time with one of Smallville, Kansas's two most famous denizens. On Wednesday, August 18, 2010, I spent the afternoon at The Art Institute of Chicago with the actress who played the girl destined to go down in history as almost ending up with Superman, if it weren't for that pesky Lois Lane. Lana Lang, the red-headed girl next door to the Boy of Steel, in almost every version of continuity always a bridesmaid and never a bride. A reunion with Lana Lang, now that's a terrific story.

From 1988 to 1992, Stacy Haiduk, 42, played Lana for four seasons and 100 episodes of "Superboy: The TV Series" (aka "The Adventures of Superboy"). Haiduk has everything someone who used to grab the Boy of Steel's attention should have - she's gorgeous, funny, talented, smart, sensitive, and, as hinted by the red hair, a bit quirky. Wig and no wig, she was Ron Weasley before Ron Weasley - or perhaps with just enough Hermione to counteract the weirds.

As the only original cast member to remain with the show for its entire run, audiences saw Lana's complete arc from college co-ed to investigator. That's why, to compare Haiduk's Lana to the Lanas played since by actress Kristin Kreuk, who played Lana Lang on "Smallville", and before by Annette O'Toole, who played a single Mom Lana in "Superman III", it's much easier to see not only what attracted Superboy to her but why audiences never felt sorry for Haiduk's Lana. It was always pretty clear in Haiduk's performance that this Lana Lang would survive, even thrive, sans Boy of Steel.

Wizard World Chicago Comic Con This Weekend

Wizard World Chicago Comic-Con begins today at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois and runs through Sunday. Tickets for the convention can be purchased online. As was the case last year, it does not appear that DC Comics has any plans to appear in an official capacity at the event. Nonetheless there will be Superman related events all weekend.

Artists and creators appearing include Brian Azzarello (Superman: For Tomorrow); Bill Sienkiewicz (Superman: Day of Doom); and Ethan Van Sciver (Superman/Batman). The celebrity guests include a trio of actors from “Smallville”: John Schneider (Pa Kent on “Smallville”); James Marsters (Brainiac/Milton Fine on “Smallville”; Lex Luthor in “Superman: Doomsday”); and Rekha Sharma (Dr. Harden on seven episodes of “Smallville”). In addition, TV’s Batman, Adam West, who played in Superman’s world as a guest on “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” and as part of the Super Friends team on “The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians” and “Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show”, will be in attendance with Boy Wonder Burt Ward.

James Marsters will be appearing at a panel on Saturday from 11:35 AM to 12:10 PM in Room A. Adam West and Burt Ward will be at a panel Saturday from 2:40 PM to 3:15 PM in Room A. West and Ward will also be hosting a cocktail party Saturday at 7 PM at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare. Marsters will be hosting a concert, photo session, and Q&A also on Saturday night. Superboy's Stacy Haiduk Greets Fans From Chicago

I had the great pleasure yesterday, August 18, 2010, of interviewing Stacy Haiduk, Lana Lang on the 1988-1992 television series “The Adventures of Superboy”. The interview will be appearing soon on both the Superman Homepage and the Superboy Homepage. We spoke at length about her time on “Superboy” as the only cast member to remain with the series for its entire four-season run. Stacy was still a teenager when she got the role of Lana Lang. We met while she was here in Chicago filming an episode of “Ride-Along” for Fox-TV.

After the interview on an outside patio at the Chicago Institute of Art, Stacy and I spent several more hours talking informally. It was during this time I asked if she’d be willing to film a brief greeting to the members of the Superman and Superboy Homepages. Yes it is true – I directed Stacy Haiduk in a brief scene. As you can probably tell, we did this in one take.

Superboy & the Legion of Superheroes Toy Line From Mattel

A brand new toyline which is highlighting Superboy & The Legion of Superheroes is coming on the horizon from Mattel. Now that Superboy is back in the comics, its seems that DC is putting out more and more with the Boy of Steel. Here is a photo from Toyfare Magazine of the new Superboy figure which looks very reminscient of Gerard Christopher's portrayal from Season 2 of the Adventures of Superboy. The padded shoulders in the cape look very John Bryneish from the mid eighties.

Superman Writer Tom Mankiewicz Passes Away

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Tom Mankiewicz writer of Superman I & II passed away on July 31. He was 68. As a screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz was instrumental in helping to bring the Man of Steel to the big screen.

Upon learning the news of the death of Tom Mankewicz, Ilya Salkind immediately called Dick Donner because he knew how close Dick and Tom were. Ilya's official statement is the following:

"I am deeply saddened by the premature and sudden loss of one of the best writers I've worked with, Tom Mankiewicz. He was an extraordinarily talented and gifted writer who's involvement in Superman I and II was essential. He was also a very kind and loving person that will sorely be missed. His great mastery writing film screenplays made working with him an unforgettable experience. He had a great sense of humor, and wit,and was a lovely person to work with. He also, of course, had a tremendous unique gift writing film screenplays. I can only wish my most heartfelt condolences to his family as well as all the many friends that he had and that loved him." - Ilya Salkind (Executive Producer, Superman I-III)

Today marks the final panel for the Smallville series at San Diego Comic Con International. Season 10 has been announced in the recent weeks as the final season for the series.

Here is the latest news directly from Kryptonsite.com & Newsarama which are there covering the final panel live from San Diego Comic Con 2010.

On the panel for Smallville: Tom Welling, Erica Durance, John Schneider, Justin Hartley, Cassidy Freeman, Kelly Souders (Producer), Brian Peterson (Producer)

The exclusive information from the Season 10 Panel:

- John Schneider will be returning as Jonathan Kent. John was also in attendance at the panel saying "Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated."
- Blue Beetle and Booster Gold will be making an appearance this season.
-The Blue Beetle is Jaime Reyes. No chance of Wonder Woman or Batman this season.
-Jaime will have "a legacy" so other Beetles may show up, at least for cameos. Booster Gold's robotic sidekick Skeets will be around as well.
- Darkseid is coming in "A different form than you're used to seeing."
- Tom Welling will be directing an episode this season.
- Lois yells out "SUPERMAN!" in the Season 10 trailer looks like its all coming to a head.
-The Superman costume is a slightly altered version of the Superman Returns suit that Brandon Routh wore.
-Kelly confirms the suit is the same suit from Superman Returns, and Brian says we might see Tom "in a little change-up from the black."
- Erica Durance (Lois Lane) will be in all 22 episodes in the final season.
- "Nothing would make us happier than to have Rosey (Michael Rosenbaum / Lex Luthor) back" and Tom says "He threatened me he'd be in the audience of this panel."
- To Tom: "What do you plan on doing after Season 10?" Tom: "Hellcats!"
- Justin Hartley (Green Arrow / Oliver Queen) will be in "17 or so" and he will be directing an episode.
-Geoff asks "Will he fly?" Brian says "We all know how the comics turn out, so that is probably the answer."
-"the door is open" for Michael Rosenbaum to return as Lex Luthor, but nothing has been locked down yet.
-Tom's favorite moment in ten seasons was "throwing a tractor."
-Kelly says the 100th episode, but only because the 200th hasn't shot yet. A glimpse of the past, present, and maybe what is to come in #200
-Chloe Sullivan will be making her first appearance in the comics in Action Comics #892
-Tom says Christopher Reeve was "an awesome guy" who was "able to do so much with what he had to use" in those scenes.
-Kelly says "We're actually not planning to send her (Chloe) off, because we love her."
-Peter Roth of Warner Bros. once said to Tom "this show will go ten years" when it all began. Turns out he was right.
-"I think between Seasons 5 and 6, we turned into another show," Tom says. "It doesn't feel like it's been 9 years"
-They're really playing up the idea of Clark finally becoming the big hero we know from comics, and it looks like that will actually happen during the season, not just at the very end.

James Marsters is Returning to Smallville!!!

James Marsters on his Official Facebook page announced that he is returning for an episode of Smallville in the fall. He will reprise his role as Milton Fine aka Brainiac for the special 200th episode of the final season.

Look for more exclusive news as the Smallville panel is schedule for tomorrow afternoon at the San Diego Comic Con 2010.

According to various sources, Chris Nolan's brother, Jonathan Nolan is the unannounced director for the new Superman reboot film. Chris will be on the project as a producer helping his brother out.

No official word has come from Warner Bros yet. May there be an announcement in a few weeks at San Diego Comic Con we will see...

Laura Vandervoort Returns to Smallville

EW's "Ausiello Files" reports that Laura Vandervoort will be returning to Smallville for one episode this season to reprise her role as Kara, aka Supergirl. This episode will supposely wrap up the Supergirl story arc.

The episode Laura will be returning in has been speculated from various sources to air in October and will be titled "Supergirl."

Day 3 started out with me getting up out of bed at 4:30am to get in line for tickets to Sam Witwer (Davis Bloom) & Laura Vandervoort (Kara / Supergirl). At around 7:00am the line for tickets to the autograph sessions started to move, thank god because I'm not a morning person. As I was standing in line, I asked some of the veterans who have been to mulitple Superman Celebrations if they thought I would get a ticket(s) to one of the sessions and they guranteed me I would be able too because we were past a certain point in the long line. Luckly, I managed to grab two tickets, one for myself and one for a friend who wasn't so lucky in getting a ticket who also was standing in the long line. I managed to get tickets to Session C which at 3:30 in the afternoon.

At about 11:30, I headed over to the Metro Tent for the Smallville Q&A. You can listen to the entire audio file by downloading it here. The discussion with both Laura and Sam was really fun in that each of the actors talked about what they have been doing since their departures from Smallville and their hopes of a return in the final season. Laura talked about her series on ABC "V" and Sam talked about his new film which he is currently shooting.

At 2:30 p.m, I decided to run over to Ilya Salkind's final autograph session. The lines for each of Ilya's autograph sessions were out the door!!!

Then at 3:00, the line started to form for the Smallville autograph session C. After getting both Laura and Sam's autograph, that was pretty much it for Day 3 of the Superman Celebration. It was a very exciting and busy day, running all over the place. As I said in my Day One report, the Superman Celebration is definitely way different than any comicbook related convention. It is like a Superman family coming together for a few days to celebrate the Man of Steel. I'm definitely plan on attending each year from now on despite the five to six hour trek from Chicago. I had such a great time meeting long time friends in-person for the first time and being able to talk with Superman and Superboy fans from all walks of life. I recommend that if you are a loyal Superman fan you should at least go once to the Superman Celebration in the future to see what it is all about. There is no media coverage of this celebration that could substitute for attending in person and meeting the wonderful men and women who put on this great celebration each and every year. Thank you to everyone and hope to see you all next year!!!

Day Two: At the Superman 32nd Annual Celebration 2010

Noel Neill Statue Ceremony & Ilya Salkind Arrives at the Celebration

DAY 2 - Friday

Day Two - The celebration opened with unveiling of the tribute statue to Noel Neill. The ceremony started out weather wise with some rain but the sky opened up. The sun came out just in time before the statue was shown to the masses of Superman fans who stood in anxious anticipation.

The ceremony was a very heart felt tribute to Noel Neill and the photos of the statue below do not do the statue justice. Every Superman fan needs to see the statue in-person. It was a beautiful and emotional tribute to the very first on screen Lois Lane.

After Noel Neill statue unveiling, at noon was a question and answer session with Ilya Salkind (Executive Producer: Superman I-III, Superboy TV Series) at the Metro Tent. The Q&A with Ilya was about an hour in length; Ilya talked about the making of Superman: The Movie. His discussion with the fans ranged from how he came about casting Christopher Reeve in the role of Clark Kent / Superman, getting Marlon Brando to play Jor-el and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, the script, and finally finding a director in Richard Donner. Ilya also did some great impersonations by breaking out his Marlon Brando impersonation during the Q&A to everyone's laughter.

Later in the day, Ilya Salkind was at Artist Alley signing autographs for the Superman masses. The line was virtually out the door as fans waited to get Ilya's autograph. The autograph session lasted for two hours at Artist Alley.

The Superman Homepage after Ilya's autograph signing at 4:30 held a Meet & Greet Session at the base of the giant Superman statue. The Superman Homepage gave out free t-shirts to each of the fans. Ilya was kind enough to come over to chat with the fans and the staff as well as take photos with them.

To wrap up the night, Ilya Salkind gave an intro speech before the screening of Superman II: The Theatrical Cut aka (Richard Lester Cut). The Superman II screening was held at Artist Alley.
